| The Devil and Tom Walker |
Tom Walker wasn't exactly what we call a "bum", he turned out to be a greedy and wealthy man. I know this because the author directly said "Tom Walker loved money as much as he loved life". Yes money is good to have, but I would appreciate life way more than a couple of dollars. Tom Walker doesn't seem to think about his actions when it comes to money. He just goes with the flow, if it turns out bad it turns out bad, if it turns out good then he was successful.
One theme to this story would have to be the lovely saying "money is the root to all evil". Its one thing to have money but totally different to let it take control your life. Following that, "money can't buy you happiness" you can have all the money in the world and be the most depressed at the same time. Enjoying life and making memories with your loved ones is what makes you happy. Tom Walker wasn't really a happy man considering he and his wife only loved money instead of each other. He didn't really care that his wife was brutally murdered finding only her heart. He let money control him and ended up loosing the most precious thing a human being is given, life.
